2015년, 인도네시아 북부 아체주 앞 바다에서 표류하던 로힝야 사람들을 아체의 어부들이 뭍으로 데려왔습니다. 저는 당시 아체에서 활동 중 이었고, 그날 처음 로힝야 사람들을 만났습니다. 그리고 7년 후, 방글라데시 콕스바자르 난민캠프에서 로힝야 사람들을 다시 만났습니다. 7년 동안 다양한 방식으로 로힝야 사람들의 삶에 대해 들었습니다. 그 중 마음에 깊이 닿은 한 마디. “나는 항상 나의 집을 기억합니다.”¹⁾ 그리움이 가득한 목소리였습니다. 하지만 저는 그 목소리에 쉬이 대답을 잇지 못했고, 시간이 흘렀습니다. 흘러간 시간만큼 무거워진 마음은 깊은 호수에 던진 돌처럼 한없이 가라앉았습니다. 많이 늦었지만, 저는 심연에서 당신에게 답신을 보냅니다.

<HEGIRA²⁾•SEASON•LANDSCAPE> 프로젝트는 로힝야 난민 캠프에서 마주한 삶의 풍경과 날씨를 사진, 소리, 글로 기록하면서 시작되었습니다. 제가 기록하며 귀 기울인 현장의 목소리에 응답하기 위해, 제가 가진 언어의 한계를 넘고자 했습니다. 그렇게 음악의 언어를 배웠습니다. 제가 더듬어 배운 음악의 언어로 혼란스러운 현장의 소리에 제 대답을 더해 곡을 썼습니다. “Letter <HANGONGGI-HEGIRA•SEASON•LANDSCAPE > Op.1 No.1 Rohingya”는 로힝야 사람들에게 보내는 제 첫 답신입니다. 밤하늘의 별처럼 셀 수 없이 많은 사람들이 난민이 되고 있습니다. 하지만 밝은 도시의 밤에는 별을 볼 수 없듯이, 우리는 그들을 잘 바라보지 못하고 있습니다. 바쁜 생활 속에서 동시대 난민의 현실을 감각하지 못한 채 우리의 삶이 흘러가고 있습니다. 계속되는 비자발적 이주의 시대에 살고 있는 당신에게 이 편지를 보냅니다.

In 2015, fishermen from Aceh brought back Rohingya people who were drifting in the sea in front of Aceh province in northern Indonesia. I was active in Aceh at the time and met the Rohingya people for the first time that day. And seven years later, I met Rohingya people again at the Cox bazar refugee camp in Bangladesh.

For the last seven years, I've heard about the lives of Rohingya people in many ways. "I always remember my home.” A voice with longing. Time passed without answering the voice. As heavy as the time passed, the heart sank endlessly like a stone thrown into a deep lake. I know it is very late, but I'm sending you a reply from the abyss.

The <HEGIRA⁾••SEASON•LANDSCAPE> project began with photography, sound and writing of the landscape and weather of life encountered in Rohingya refugee camps. I learned the language of music that crosses the limits of written language to respond to the voices of the field I listened to while recording. "Letter <HANGONGGI-HEGIRA•SEASON•LANDSCAPE> Op.1 No.1 Rohingya," a song made by adding my answer to the sound of a confused scene in a learned language, is the first reply to the Rohingya people.

Countless people are becoming refugees like stars in the night sky. Just as the stars are not visible in a city with a bright night, a busy life is passing by without feeling the reality of refugees in the same time. I am writing to you who are living in an era of constant forced migration.
